The handball tournament offered students a safe, inclusive, and fun environment to participate in an adaptable team sport activity. The handball tournament was officiated by students from RMSS. It featured a total of nearly 150 participants attending from Golden Avenue Public School, Bertha Shaw Public School, Schumacher Public School, Pinecrest Public School, Timmins Centennial Public School, and W. Earle Miller Public School, in addition to students from Mary Jane Naveau Memorial School from Mattagami First Nation. Students had the opportunity to play in either the morning or afternoon session to maximize their opportunity for participation.
During this handball tournament, participants engaged in physical activity while practicing collaboration, relationship building, and teamwork. Students had the opportunity to adhere to tournament schedules, interact with officiating and rules, and practice self-regulation, which are valuable skill sets that can be applied to future athletic and non-athletic activities.
“Our students had a great time, and the teachers mentioned it was well organized,” expressed Shane Rentelis, Principal at Golden Avenue Public School. For Bertha Shaw Public School, “our grade 4 students enjoyed their morning at RMSS! Handball was so much fun!” Christy Lafontaine, Principal at Timmins Centennial Public School, was eager for all Grade 4 students to participate and shared that “it was a fun day, great to get the students involved in some inter school activities.” At W. Earle Miller Public School, “students had fun competing against various teams from across our school board.”
The DSB1 handball tournament was organized by Pinecrest Public School educator Patrick Selin with the support of school administrators and coaching staff. “It was a well received event,” expressed Patrick.
At DSB1, we collectively prioritize Relationships, Resiliency, Pathways and Partnerships, Growth Mindset, Trust, and Student Voice. This month, students in Grades 5 and 6 throughout the DSB1 Central region are eager to participate in a DSB1 ball hockey tournament refereed by students from Timmins High and Vocational School.
